Brainiac 5 File Background information. |

Report:At long last I have finally had the chance to examine Querl Dox, who was formerly called Brainiac 5 and who has now dubbed himself "Brainiac 5.1" {Doctor Gym'll, please pardon my intrusion into this record. I noticed this file in the computer system and was curious about your opinion concerning me. I will try not to correct the other errors in your report, but to give due credit I must tell you that "Brainiac 5.1" was actually a sobriquet coined and bestowed upon me by my good friend Gates. He has such a keen sense of humor and the designation is fitting, so I have decided to retain it. Again, please forgive my interruption.} since his so-called "upgrade" in the Anomaly from which he and a group of his teammates recently returned [see files on Kinetix, Gates, Umbra, M'Onel, and Andromeda]. Previous attempts to examine Brainiac 5 had met with no success as the subject, without ever looking up from his work, would dismiss my summons of him for a regular check-up with a rather haughty "I am quite capable of seeing to my own health and well-being, Doctor. In the future, please refrain from disturbing me." {Was I really that rude? Please accept my apologies, Doctor.} That's the trouble with working for this group of hooligans--they all think they can take care of themselves! Why do they need a physician of my stature on staff then? Most of the time, I'm tempted to leave them to their own devices, return to my own practice, and then see who doesn't need my services when one member is deprived of his powers and another is forcibly combined with a twin she didn't even know she had! To resume, what information I had on file concerning Brainiac 5 had come from his fellow Legionnaires, most notably Spark, who claims to have "bonded" with him during their extended stay in the 20th Century. For example, she informed me that Dox had been abandoned at birth by his mother, known as Brainiac 4. She also maintains that Dox's repeated infatuations with statuesque blonde females (namely Andromeda and a 20th-century hero named Supergirl) is due to his Oedipal fixation with finding this mother (apparently tall and blonde herself).{Interesting.} Given Spark's penchant for romantic holovids of the most nauseating sort, I must call into serious question this rather childish and simplistic explanation. Other sentients who find a certain "type" erotically appealing do not have these responses due to vague memories of a missing parent. The idea is simply ludicrous! Spark's additional information concerning Brainiac 5 is thus also suspect and not worth further explanation. {Now, now, Doctor. No need to be so harsh on the poor girl. Surely some of the information she provided is accurate. Ayla would not knowingly spread misinformation, and next to Gates she is probably my closest comrade on the team.} Upon his return with the others from this Anomaly, Brainiac 5.1 was actually willing to undergo an examination, cursory though it was. Although is physical appearance did not change as dramatically as Andromeda's and his personality modification is not as severe as that of Kinetix, the difference is nevertheless noticeable. His hair is considerably shorter, and he now has his force-field controls further miniaturized and attached to his face rather than wearing them on his belt as previously. (I must say that I agree with Spark's assessment that this new look is rather aesthetically ridiculous [though she used a 20th-century colloquialism that she had picked up--"dorky"].) {I must say, I can't see any reason for this to be included in a medical report. I really must take offense at this.} He has also become more personable (to a rather annoying degree in my opinion, although I will note that his teammates seem to approve of the change), as seen by his willingness to be examined and his newfound jocular friendship with Gates, with whom he was previously on rather antagonist terms, I am told. {Nonsense, Gates and I were never antagonist toward one another. It was all part of our good-natured sparring.} I had feared that his 12th-level intellect was damaged or lessened in some way, as Kinetix's intelligence has seemingly been impaired, but he proved otherwise by rapidly (and rather smugly, I might add) solving the most complex equations I could present to him. {Doctor, I regret to tell you that those equations were no fitting test for my intelligence. Even a 6th-level intellect could have easily solved them. Though I hasten to add that your conclusion is still valid; there has been no damage done to my intellectual capabilities. Just the opposite, in fact.} He claims to be even more intelligent than before, more creative, and capable of maintaining more lines of separate thought. [Might he possibly be of 13th-level intelligence now? {An intriguing idea. I am skeptical that my upgrade has had that dramatic an effect, but I will seriously consider the possibility.} I must remember to delve into the history of the Brainiac line of Colu. {Please allow me. I have uploaded the relevant files into this folder for your perusal. Please do be careful with the information, since some of it is rather sensitive.}] Based on my limited examination of him, I see no reason to remove him from active duty, though I am tempted to remand him into psychological treatment to determine if the effects upon his personality from this upgrade are at all harmful and whether they will be permanent. {An interesting report, Doctor, though hardly what I expected. I wonder if I should peek at some of the other files in order to judge whether this is typical of your treatment. Perhaps Sister Andromeda's. . . .} End of file |
